Google says missing reviews are usually removed for breaking a Google policy, such as spam. Others are held for a few days while Google checks them, or deleted by the customer who wrote them. Google also says its automated spam filter occasionally removes real reviews by mistake.
Check this first: sign in to the Google account that manages your Business Profile and select Read reviews (Report inappropriate reviews). Count what you see. Then open a private browser window, search your business name and town on Google Maps, and count again. Write both numbers down before you change anything.
Why did my Google reviews disappear?
Google's page on missing reviews says, "Usually, reviews are removed for policy violations like spam or inappropriate content" (About missing or delayed reviews). The same page lists the other reasons Google gives:
- New reviews are checked against Google's policies first, which "might take a few days."
- If you recently merged two Business Profiles, reviews from both "might take a few days" to show. Merging is covered in our duplicate listing article.
- Customers on older phones or software may have trouble leaving a review.
- Google "might temporarily disable" reviews for some profiles or business categories.
- Reviews are sometimes removed after a suspended profile is reinstated.
Google's review-management page adds one more. Reviews are "available only in certain countries or regions and for certain business categories," and that can change over time (Manage customer reviews).
There is also a reason Google doesn't list on that page, because it isn't Google's doing. The customer may have deleted the review. More on that below.
How do I tell whether my reviews are really gone?
Use the two counts from the first step.
- Both counts are lower than before. The reviews are off your profile for everyone. Work through the sections below.
- Your signed-in view and the private window don't match. Write down both numbers and the date, and take screenshots. Then contact support from the Google Business Profile Help Center. We found no Google page that explains a mismatch like this, so don't guess at the cause.
- Your whole profile is missing from the private window, not just the reviews. That is a different problem. Our article on the "only visible to managers" label walks through it.
If you reported any reviews yourself, also check the Reviews Management Tool. It shows the status of each report: decision pending, no policy violation found, or escalated (Report inappropriate reviews).
Did Google's spam filter remove real reviews?
It can happen, and Google says so. "To remove reviews identified as spam, Google uses automated spam detection." Google adds, "Occasionally, the system may also mistakenly remove legitimate reviews. If this happens, contact support for assistance" (Report inappropriate reviews).
Google's content policy says it uses "a combination of people and machine-learning algorithms" to find content that breaks its rules (Maps user-generated content policy). We found no Google page that lists what sets the filter off. Anyone who claims to know the exact triggers is guessing.
When you contact support, bring specific details. Note the reviewer names you remember, the dates the reviews went up, and when you noticed they were gone.
Can a customer delete their own Google review?
Yes. Google Maps lets anyone edit or delete a review they wrote, from Your contributions and then Reviews (Add, edit, or delete Google Maps reviews). Google also says customers "can still change their review" after you reply. If they do, the date on the review changes to the date of the edit (Manage customer reviews).
So a review that seems to have vanished may have been edited and now carry a new date. Look for the customer's name before you assume it is gone. If it really was deleted, that was the customer's choice, and there is nothing to ask Google for.
Why isn't a customer's new review showing up?
Start with time. Google says new reviews are checked, and the check "might take a few days" (About missing or delayed reviews).
If a week has passed, the customer can look at their own side. In Google Maps, they open Your contributions, then Reviews. Google says removed content may still show in the writer's profile, marked "Not posted," "Private," "Not Accepted," or similar (Removed & rejected content). Google says it tells the writer what was removed and why "where required under applicable laws."
Two more things to check with the customer:
- They must be signed in to a Google Account to leave a review. They can make one with a non-Gmail email address (Tips to get more reviews).
- If they use an old phone, Google suggests updating the Google Maps app (About missing or delayed reviews).
Could something I did have caused reviews to be removed?
It's worth an honest look, because Google lists things a business can do that get reviews removed. Its policy on fake engagement and rating manipulation rules out (Prohibited & restricted content):
- Reviews posted because the business offered something, "such as payment, discounts, free goods and/or services."
- Reviews based on a conflict of interest. Google names current or former employment and family relationships as examples.
- Asking only happy customers for reviews. Google's words are "selectively solicit positive reviews."
- Asking staff to collect a set number of reviews, or reviews that name a staff member.
- "Unusual volumes or patterns" of reviews that point to an effort to manipulate a rating.
Someone else may have done one of these for you without asking. A marketing company, a past employee or a well-meaning relative are all possible. The FTC's rule also bans incentives tied to a positive or negative review (16 CFR 465.4). Our article Can you offer incentives for Google reviews? covers both sets of rules.
If Google finds this kind of activity, it may do more than remove reviews. It may block new reviews or hide existing ones for a set period. It may also show customers a warning that fake reviews were removed. Google says it emails the owner before it applies a restriction (Business Profile restrictions for policy violations). So check the inbox tied to your profile, including spam.
Can I get removed Google reviews back?
It depends on why they went.
- Removed for a policy violation: no. Google says, "Reviews removed for policy violations won't be restored" (About missing or delayed reviews).
- Removed by the spam filter by mistake: Google says to contact support (Report inappropriate reviews). Google does not promise a result or a timeline.
- Removed after your profile was reinstated: Google says to contact support (About missing or delayed reviews).
- Hidden by a restriction on your profile: Google says you can appeal, and it will re-review the profile (Business Profile restrictions for policy violations).
- Deleted by the customer: that is up to the customer.
Do not try to replace lost reviews by asking friends, staff or family to post new ones. Google's policy does not allow reviews based on a conflict of interest, and it names employment and family ties (Prohibited & restricted content). Google can also restrict a whole profile over fake reviews, so the risk is bigger than a few reviews.
What should I do, in order?
| Step | What to check | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Your signed-in review count, and a private-window count on Maps | Write both down with the date |
| 2 | The two counts don't match | Screenshot both, then contact Google support |
| 3 | A review was recent | Wait a few days for Google's check |
| 4 | The customer's own Your contributions page | Ask if it shows "Not posted" or was deleted |
| 5 | An email from Google about a restriction | Fix the cause, then appeal |
| 6 | Real reviews gone with no notice | Contact support about a mistaken spam removal |
